چکیده

The Soil-Water Characteristic Curve (SWCC) is an important soil function relating the water content of a soil to soil suction. Many unsaturated soil properties (or soil property functions) can be related to the water content versus suction relationship of a soil. Hydraulic conductivity, shear strength, chemical diffusivity, water storage, unfrozen volumetric water content, specific heat, and thermal conductivity are all functions of the Soil-Water Characteristic Curve. Considerable judgment is required to develop the relationship between soil property functions. The judgment rules can be enforced using a knowledge-based system based on observations and empirical relationships amongst soil property functions. A knowledge-based system was developed using a relational database management system (RDBMS) known as Microsoft’s Access database program. Access provided a suitable environment for combining the user interface, knowledge base, database, and query system. This system provides an estimate of the Soil-Water Characteristic Curve as well as the other unsaturated property functions using basic soil classification data such as the grain-size distribution, density and specific gravity. The system allows the estimation of many complex soil properties while reducing both time and cost requirements. 1 Graduate Student, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Sask., Canada S7N 5A9 2 Professor of Civil Engineering, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Sask., Canada S7N 5A9

Estimation of Water Retention Curve for Unsaturated Fine Soils

In order to obtain the soil water retention curve of an unsaturated soil which is defined as the relationship between water content and suction, extensive laboratory tests are essential. These laboratory tests are usually costly and time consuming. Moreover, for most practical problems, it has been found that approximate unsaturated soil properties are adequate for analysis. Thus, empirical pro...

The Influence of Using Soil Particles Percentage in Comparison with Geometric Characteristics of Soil Particles on the Accuracy of the Pedotransfer Equations and the Critical Point of SWRC

Soil water retention curve (SWRC) reflects different states of soil moisture and describes quantitative characteristics of the unsaturated parts of the soil. Direct measurement of SWRC is time-consuming, difficult and costly. Therefore, many indirect attempts have been made to estimate SWRC from other soil properties. Using pedotransfer functions is one of the indirect methods for estimating SW...

Direct Hydraulic Parameter and Function Estimation for Diverse Soil Types Under Infiltration and Evaporation

Anew computationally efficient directmethod is applied to estimating unsaturated hydraulic properties during steady-state infiltration and evaporation at soil surface. For different soil types with homogeneous and layered heterogeneity, soil hydraulic parameters and unsaturated conductivities are estimated. Unlike the traditional indirect inversion method, the direct method does not require for...

تخمین منحنی مشخصه رطوبتی و هدایت هیدرولیکی غیراشباع خاک در تراکم‌های

Hydraulic conductivity is an important parameter in the design of geotechnical structures such as earth dam, floor construction, retaining walls and environmental structures. In unsaturated soils, hydraulic conductivity is a function of moisture content and soil water suction i.e. soil moisture characteristic curve. In this study, the values of unsaturated hydraulic conductivity in two soil typ...

Indirect estimation of soil thermal properties and water flux using heat pulse probe measurements: Geometry and dispersion effects

[1] Traditionally, analytical solutions for heat transport in soils have been used in combination with heat pulse probe (HPP) measurements to estimate soil thermal properties. Although the analytical method has resulted in accurate estimation of soil thermal properties, we suggest that parameter estimation using inverse modeling (IM) provides new and unique opportunities for soil thermal charac...
